BIOGRAPHY
Jared Martin is an Emmy-winning documentary editor and filmmaker whose work centers on shaping complex, real-world stories with clarity, restraint, and emotional precision. He has since led the cutting room on a range of high-profile series, including the Critics Choice-nominated Shiny Happy People (Amazon), Trial by Media (Netflix) produced by George Clooney, and Science Fair: The Series (National Geographic), which earned him an Emmy.
Documentary and nonfiction storytelling has appealed to Jared from a young age. When he was 14, he made a film about Sudanese refugees known as the Lost Boys. The film went on to play the festival circuit and took home 4 awards including the Columbine Award for nonviolent conflict resolution and 2 audience choice awards. That early experience—telling stories without a script, resources, or a roadmap—cemented his interest in nonfiction storytelling and the creative responsibility that comes with it.
Throughout his career, Jared has been fortunate enough to collaborate with some of the top filmmakers in the genre such as David Gelb (Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Chef's Table), Oscar-nominated Garrett Bradley (Time, Naomi Osaka), and Gillian Jacobs (Community, Love). His work has been seen at festivals like SXSW and Tribeca and on major platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Disney+, and National Geographic.
Jared is drawn to stories that resist easy answers and push the boundaries of the genre while honoring the truth of the material. He believes documentary editing is an act of authorship, a process of constructing meaning out of chaos. Working from hundreds and sometimes thousands of hours of footage, he approaches the edit as a form of discovery, where structure, pacing, and juxtaposition reveal deeper emotional and thematic truths while respecting the lived reality of the subjects on screen.
Jared is an alumnus of the USC School of Cinematic Arts. He is a proud member of the Television Academy and the Alliance of Documentary Editors (ADE).
